Seemingly every presidential election results in people discussing if the new president is the antichrist. I heard it with Obama, Trump, and now Biden.
The answer is “no.” Here’s why:
First, this implies the antichrist will be an American, which is a typical American thing to think. America isn’t in biblical prophecy in any explicit way. Most prophecy surrounds the Middle East. America isn’t in the Middle East. My guess is that the antichrist will be from the Middle East.
Second, according to dispensational theology (which takes biblical prophecy as literal as possible and believes there will be a person called the antichrist), the antichrist shows up in the Great Tribulation Period. We aren’t in the Great Tribulation Period, so the antichrist is not in power right now. There is a chance he could be before the Tribulation and really get going during it, but I doubt it.
Allow me to make one more point.
If you think the political party that you hate is the one that the antichrist will come from, let me suggest you are already under the sway of the antichrist.
The antichrist won’t be conservative or liberal; he plays both sides and creates seeming peace. The thing to fear is not the other side of politics; the thing to fear is politics itself.
John says in 1 John that the spirit of antichrist is already at work in the world. How do you recognize the spirit of antichrist?
1 John 2:17-18—it emphasizes the things of this world rather than doing God’s will. Worldly things like paying excessive attention to politics. Are you fulfilling God’s will (love) when you are ranting and raving about your political opinions?
1 John 2:22-23—it denies the divinity of the Son and Father, primarily by looking excessively at other authorities than God, such as politicians and government.
1 John 4:2-3—it denies that God became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ, the King of Kings, the Prince of Peace, and the Messiah—the only human ever capable of rescuing humanity from its ills. If you think your politicians can fix all humanity’s problems while the other team’s politicians will create all humanity’s problems, you’re missing many things.
2 John 6-7—Jesus Christ is the embodiment of love, when we don’t love, we deny Jesus Christ. The antichrist will have you focus on things that will destroy love and increase hatred, like, oh, I don’t know, party politics.
Have your politics created love amongst your neighbors? Do you show love to your enemies in the midst of political discourse? Do you talk about the person of Jesus Christ or your human political person more? Who controls your emotions more?
The antichrist is trying to be your messiah, your replacement for Jesus. To a lesser degree, politicians are trying to be the messiah, the one who steps in and creates peace on earth and solves all our ills.
The antichrist is a government official. Although we are to honor government leaders and lead a quiet life, we also keep them in their place. They’re just people, flawed as any other human, which is why we look to Christ to solve our ills, not people.
Remember, if it were possible, false christs (and who’s more of a false Christ than THE antichrist) would deceive even the elect.
Y’all better be on your toes out there. Walk circumspectly. Be sober. Be vigilant. You have an adversary and he eats people like you for lunch. And he’s not on the other side of your politics; he’s on the side of hell. He’s trying to distract you all the way there. Don’t be ignorant of his devices. Fight the fight.
