God’s Judgment of Sodom had Little to do With Homosexuality

1) Homosexuality is a sin, the Bible is clear on that.
2) Homosexuality is not worse than any other sin.

Although most Christians understand point one (although the numbers are decreasing as more decide words don’t mean what they say), few seem to get point two.

The destruction of Sodom is pointed at to show just how bad homosexuality is. However, never once in the Bible will you find homosexuality listed as the reason God destroyed Sodom.

What you will note, is that the reasons given for the destruction of Sodom sound a lot like the sins of Christians! Allow me to illustrate with two verses.

“They declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not.”

A major point against Sodom is how public their sin was. Their nerve in demanding a guy hand over his guests to they can have their way with them, THAT is what got to God! The sheer lack of shame instead replaced with proud, maniacal, unbridled, put on display lust.

Here’s another verse that makes Sodom’s sin very clear.

“This was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.”

I would like you to note that in this list of Sodom’s sins, homosexuality is not listed! Not even hinted at. Instead, what is listed is:

1) Pride
2) Fulness of bread
3) Abundance of idleness
4) Not helping the poor and needy

Those were the sins Sodom was punished for! They were proud, fat, lazy people who didn’t help the poor.

I’m just curious how the church has decided this wasn’t God’s point in judging Sodom when this is what God said His point was, and instead the church chose homosexuality.

Curious, no?

  1. Thank you. That issue has become so overbearing that your comments here and in other posts have helped me to breathe. Also, thanks for the always helpful conviction.

  2. Yeah, I was waiting for the exception! There’s always one, which is good cuz it keeps us from extreme views. But not if you ignore those pesky verses!

I do know that the homosexuality on display there is wrong and is wrong other places too, no argument there. I do feel the Church has gone a little nuts against it, however, in light of the other issues at play there too that no one mentions.

  3. I have a friend of mine that does not believe in God, in fact he despises anything to do with a higher being. He once said, “Why do Christians pick out the sin on homosexuality but say hardly anything about the adultery in marriage, the couples living together, sex before marriage that clam to follow the teachings of Christ?” I told him he had a point.
The Bible says that homosexuality is a sin along with liars, fornicators, adulterers, thief’s,blasphemers, drunkards, murderers, convectors, and so on. The point is we should never pick out one sin and over look the others. We are to seek God in His righteousness in all that we do. In 1 John 2:15-16 we are told to not love this world, to not seek the desires of the flesh.
1 John 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin, but if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.
The truth is we are all sinners and we are to show others what God says about sin but we are to never look down on others thinking that their sin is worse than ours.

  4. I am not a homosexual and homosexual behaviour doesn’t tempt me in any way – therefore homosexuality is a “safe” sin to rail against.

Those others things that God lists as his reason for destroying Sodom…
…well they can be a little too close to home at times.
