Overcome By Faith Plus Something

Revelation 12 is an interesting passage. There is a red dragon, Satan, chasing around a woman giving birth to a man-child who will rule the nations. Fascinating behind the scenes look at God’s plan and Satan’s opposition.

Near the end, John describes the people who defeat Satan by saying (12:11), “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”

They overcome “by” and the word “by” means “because of, or on the grounds of.” They overcome Satan on the grounds of the Lamb’s blood AND on the grounds of the word of their testimony–the fact that they did not value their own lives.

In other words, near as I can tell, it was the blood of the Lamb AND their testimony in completely trusting the blood of the Lamb with their lives.

Sort of makes you grasp what God means by “faith” a little more doesn’t it? Faith without works is dead, y’all.

  1. Faith = Action
Luther said he had a hard time with the book of James. But James put meat on the bones of faith, saving faith is alive and active. Good word as always Jeff, I appreciate your teachings.

  2. It reminds me that the promise made in the beginning, that the “seed of the woman should bruise the serpent’s head” includes not just Jesus, but His seed also, which are His children. Satan is to be bruised under our feet also…this seems to be a necessary part in the victory of good over evil.

In other words, although Christ gave the demonstration that even mortal humanity can be obedient to God under any circumstance, and thus proved Satan’s charges against God to be groundless, the battle did not stop there. Satan has another argument against this: “Ah, but He was the Son of God…He was special…an immaculate conception. This can’t be done through regular humanity…man cannot overcome…God’s law is too hard.”

Therefore, the word of our testimony is also required, that “through faith” we also can have the victory, and “delight to do God’s will, for His law is in our heart.” This is what God promises. His word is at stake. Will we rise to the challenge? It is a rare opportunity we have, to give a witness to God, in the sight of the universe, that not even angels can give.
